Summer 2009 Crusader Nation Magazine Now Available

The Crusader Athletics Fund is wrapping up a successful third year of annual fundraising. As of June 25, the program has raised more than $500,000 from more than 1,400 donors. If you would like to contribute and be counted as a donor this year, you have until Tuesday, June 30 to do so. You may do so by clicking on the Holy Cross Athletics Fund link on the main page of the athletics web site and following the on-screen instructions. Donors may contribute to any sport of their choice or to the Athletics All-Sports Fund. Thank you to everyone who has supported the program so far. Your support makes a difference to each of our 27 varsity sports.

Baseball Places Nine On Patriot League Academic Honor Roll

Nine members of the Holy Cross baseball team have been selected to the 2009 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the league office, including senior Billy Cupelo who made the Academic Honor Roll for the fourth time. The other members of the team to be named to the honor roll were juniors Tommy Arrigg, Matt Perry, Dmitri Seredenko and John Sills; sophomores Steve Anderson and Jack Laurendeau; and freshmen Derek Klinka and Nate Koneski.

Matt Perry Earns Second Team All-New England Honors

Holy Cross junior third baseman Matt Perry has been selected second team All-New England, as announced by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association. Perry will now take part in the 2009 New England All-Star Game, which will take place on Thursday, June 4, at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.The 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year, Perry hit .423 this season with 16 doubles, seven home runs, 42 runs scored and 37 runs batted in. He led the Patriot League in both batting average and on-base percentage (.491), in addition to standing third in the conference in slugging percentage (.626).

The Holy Cross baseball team concluded the 2009 season by falling to Army in a best-of-three series in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals at West Point, N.Y., on May 9-10. The Crusaders finish the 2009 season with a 22-27 overall record and 11-7 in Patriot League play while the Black Knights improve to 31-18 on the season and 13-7 in the league.

The Crusaders fell to the Black Knights, 5-1, in the first game of the series today. The Crusaders are now 22-26 overall while the Black Knights are 30-18 on the season.

The team is comprised of players from Division I schools in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. This is the first time that Ciardiello and Perry have received this honor in their careers.

Junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) was named the 2009 Patriot League Baseball Player of the Year. All the major awards are voted upon by the league's coaches and were announced this morning. Earlier in the week, Perry was named to the All-Patriot League first team for the first time in his career. This is Perry's first career major award. Perry is the third player at Holy Cross to be recognized with this honor in school history, joining Jim Sweeney ('99) and Peter Summa ('01).

Three Holy Cross baseball players were named to the All-All-Patriot League teams, as announced by officials today. Junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) was named to the All-Patriot League first team while senior pitcher Dan Seip (North Carver, Mass.) and senior outfielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) were named to the second team. Named to the first team for the first time in his career, Perry was also the recipient of the Holy Cross' 2009 Hop Riopel Award, given to the baseball team's most valuable player.

The Holy Cross baseball team begins the Patriot League tournament this weekend, traveling to West Point, N.Y. The third-seeded Crusaders will play No. 2 Army in a best-of-three series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, May 9, beginning at 12:00 p.m. If necessary, a third game is scheduled for Sunday, May 10, starting at 1:00 p.m. Should Holy Cross win its series with Army, it will face the winner of the Bucknell-Lafayette series in a best-of-three series on May 16-17. The series would be played in Worcester if the Crusaders face Lafayette or in Lewisburg, Pa. if Holy Cross plays Bucknell. Holy Cross is looking to clinch its first Patriot League title.

Matt Perry Receives Hop Riopel Award

Junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.), a member of the Holy Cross baseball team, has received the 2009 Hop Riopel Award. The award was presented at the 54th annual Holy Cross Varsity Club dinner, held at the Hogan Campus Center on Satruday, May 2.The Riopel Award is presented each year to the most valuable player of the Crusader baseball team.Perry leads the team with a .439 batting average on the year, to go along with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Steve Tkowski Receives Ron Soucie Award

Freshman catcher Steve Tkowski (Bourne, Mass.) has been named the 2009 recipient of the Ron Soucie Award. Created by his former teammates Rick DeAngelis (Class of 1970) and Tom Kelly (Class of 1967), the Soucie Award is presented annually to the Rookie of the Year on the Holy Cross baseball team.During the 2009 season, Tkowski has played in 24 games for the Crusaders, starting 14 times. He currently ranks second on the team with a .411 batting average, to go along with a .661 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base percentage.

Sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate including two runs batted in but the Holy Cross baseball team fell to Maine, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Goodall Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 21-25 while the Black Bears improve to 28-15. Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a one-out single to left field.

With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 21-24 while the Rams improve to 30-13-1. Sophomore Eric Oxford (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) both extended their streaks also, Oxford to 10 games and Cupelo to seven games.

The Holy Cross baseball team will play its last two games of the regular season this week. The Crusaders will host Rhode Island in its final home game on Tuesday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m. The last meeting between the teams was on April 18, 2006, with host Holy Cross dropping a 9-2 decision. Holy Cross will travel to Maine for its final away game on Wednesday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m. The last time the teams met was on April 26, 2006, with Maine picking up a 4-3 home victory.

Billy Cupelo Named AT&T Crusader Of The Week

Senior outfielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass.) has been named the AT&T Crusader of the Week, for competition from April 20-26. Cupelo led the Holy Cross baseball team to a 4-1 record on the week, including three wins over Navy to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. Over the course of last week's games, Cupelo went 9-for-19 (.474) with seven runs scored and four runs batted in. During Saturday's doubleheader against Navy, he was 4-for-7 with three runs batted in and four runs scored. Cupelo hit his first triple of the season in Saturday's first game against the Midshipmen, then belted the first home run of his collegiate career during the nightcap.

Baseball Sweeps Navy In Patriot League Twinbill

Senior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) broke the Holy Cross record for career home runs, driving in his 21st home run as the Holy Cross baseball team swept Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader by scores of 9-5 and 9-2 on Sunday afternoon at Fitton Field. With the wins, the Crusaders improve to 20-23 and 11-7 in the league while the Midshipmen fall to 18-26-1 overall and 8-12 in league play. The Crusaders won the four-game series, 3-1. Gorman's home run surpasses the former record held by Ben Power ('99) with 20.

The Crusaders picked up a 13-8 win in the first game and then dropped a 12-11 decision in game two. The Crusaders are now 19-23 overall and 9-7 in league play, while the Midshipmen are 18-24-1 and 8-10 in the league. Freshman Steve Tkowski (Bourne, Mass.) finished the day with a 4-for-7 performance including a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
